What Will You Be Covered For?
Surgery only cat or dog insurance plans are the most basic policy available and hence the cheapest. They have a maximum payable amount per year for surgery for illness or injury. This may include scans, X-Rays and biopsies if they result in surgery.
More expensive cat or dog insurance plans may also cover neutering, microchipping, non surgical treatments, vaccinations, alternative therapies (such as homeopathy, physiotherapy, acupuncture, chiropractic), advertising for lost pets, replacement pet after death due to illness or injury, boarding fees if the owner is hospitalised, pet funeral costs. Routine dental treatments, flea treatments and routine eye surgery are usually not covered.
Hereditary conditions may not be covered at all, or they may not be covered if they occur when the animal is young. Some cat and dog insurance policies only cover hereditary conditions if the initial occurrence is after the animal is 3 years old for instance.
Cat and dog insurance policies may not cover your pet for the same illness forever. For instance cover for a specific illness may only be provided for six months after the initial occurrence of that illness.
Your pet may not be covered immediately when you take out a cat or dog insurance policy. For example your policy may commence 14 days later. This is to avoid people claiming for a pre-existing condition or vet bill at the time of taking out the policy.
